With Christmas well and truly over, I spent some time researching how much was spent over the festive period (for articles, not just for fun). While there are some extremely interesting statistics on average household spend in the UK and the US, one piece of research caught my eye — the amount spent in 2017 by Santa Claus.

An infographic put together by Serenata Flowers shows how much it would cost to be Santa for a single year, pulling in costs for the gifts, delivering them (via sea and road rather than reindeer) and factoring in staff costs (elves), insurance and a raft of other expenses.

It seems that if you did want to take up the mantle of Santa, you’d need to spend somewhere in the region of $25bn, making Santa one of the world’s richest men. I’m sure in today’s market he could pull in a solid amount giving personal appearances and sharing the latest toys via social media, but turning over that sort of annual figure would still take some doing:
