There’s a commonly held belief in the UK that you should spend 2–3 month’s wages on an engagement ring, which — according to the average national salary — is around £5,400 for most people.

While most people will claim to have heard (and agree) with this general rule of thumb, how many men in the United Kingdom are actually spending that amount on a ring?

According to new research from Hipper.com, who surveyed thousands of people across the country, men aren’t spending anywhere near 2–3x their salary. In fact, the average spend is just 0.57x wages, with an average total of just £1,042 (or 12 working days).

Their research also found that some areas of the UK are more generous than others when it comes to splashing out on an engagement ring, with Belfast topping the generosity tables (£1,567.18) and Norwich bringing up the rear (£614.10).
